Etty Hillesum quote with "Balm in Gilead" image

Inspirational quote digital print: I created "Balm in Gilead" in 2015 by carving, staining & painting my drawing of a woman's figure onto a wood block. I was inspired by the song "There Is a Balm in Gilead", a traditional African American spiritual and reference from the Bible. A gentleman purchased it as a gift for someone important in his life who is a cancer survivor, but I kept a photo and used it to make this poster with one of my favorite quotes from Etty Hillesum: "We should be willing to act as a balm for all wounds." Etty was killed in Auschwitz in 1943 but left behind her diaries. In 1998 I read these in a paperback book loaned to me by a friend. When an enhanced edition was published (Etty Hillesum: An Interrupted Life and Letters from Westerbork), I read that too. I used the Canva app to combine Etty's quote with my artwork image.

I have shown in my photos how I printed this digital download onto letter size (8.5 x 11 inch) brochure paper with my own printer. But larger posters may be printed if desired. I provide both PDF and jpg files to download.
